Back in 1988, an eager young art student saw an ad from Blackthorne publishing looking for comic book artists who cold draw big Mechs, and he readied three pages for their review. He was hired! Angels sang! Life was definitely fine as his lifelong career goal was realized (nevemind that the pay was low)
They needed the pages fast, so he penciled his first book in 3 weeks! (28 pages, at the same time he was putting together his Art Institute portfolio!) Shortly thereafter, a 2nd BT script came his way and he drew the entire thing and was pretty darn happy with them! Who cared that he had to spend a $100 on reference material for the machines, blast it! He was a professional comic book artist!

He sent the 2nd book to the inker, who just few weeks later sent back the half inked pages, informing him that the publisher, one Steve Schanes, made a bad deal with an oversea distributor and Blackthorne went promptly bankrupt. The young artist became older, wiser and more cynical about fly-by-night art clients, a healthy lesson. And now you know... The Rest of the Story!
